Playing with colour

'Dancing sky' - 60cm x 60cm

‘Dancing sky’ – 60cm x 60cm – oil on canvas – £770

When I’m painting the sky, it’s moving all the time, changing light, changing colour, changing form. Here, I’m just trying to capture that energy.

'Sea pink' - 30cm x 30cm

‘Sea pink’ – 30cm x 30cm oil on canvas – £295

I had great fun with this, it came from a sketch done whilst walking along the Cornish coast. Working from that sketch when I got home liberated the painting from having to ‘be’ the right colour.

'Sea green' - 30cm x 60cm

Sea green – 30cm x 60cm – oil on canvas – £550 – SOLD from The Harbour Gallery, Portscatho, Cornwall

The view from Falmouth towards St. Antony’s head lighthouse. Playing with colour.

Solo show at Fowey River Gallery

Just about to deliver 34 paintings to Fowey River Gallery for my solo exhibition showing from 8th April – 23rd April 2017.

It’s been really fantastic making a large body of work, translating thoughts of and visions of Cornwall and sailing adventures beyond.

Anchorage, Borgvig Glacier, Greenland – oil on canvas – £1250

In the August of 2016 my partner and I were lucky enough to crew on the Aegle on a sailing trip in Greenland. An amazing, vast, beautiful, wonderful and vulnerable landscape, and an unforgettable adventure.

New show at Fowey River Gallery

I am very pleased to say that I have a new exhibition coming up at The Fowey River Gallery, Cornwall from 26th March – 9th April 2016

I’ve had a wonderful time exploring and sketching some of the beautiful coastline around Fowey and then putting together this body of work, which features traditional sailing boats in and around the Fowey estuary, as well as local coves and beaches.

The Sea

Recent work – The Pilots Cutters

‘Waiting for ‘the off’, Fowey,  oil on canvas – 100cm x 100cm – SOLD

Every year the Pilot Cutter Review is held on a  May weekend in Cornwall.  Here are some of the boats hoisting sails, waiting for the race line to form. Mascotte is in the centre, one of the original Bristol Channel Pilot Cutters, with the distinctive N on her sail, for Newport. On the left is the beautiful Pilot Cutter Freya, newly built by Luke Powell and Working Sail, launched in April this year. In the background in full tan sail is the Westerman who took part in the racing.

Interior and space

Recent work – still life

‘The squeeze’  oil on canvas – 30cm x 30cm – SOLD

Here I have tried to capture the feel of  lemons, not just their appearance. The intense, fresh, face-puckering citrus danger –  sharp feel, sharp flavour.  In this image though, all the energy has gone out of the fruit, the danger – passed. The colours have dulled, the focus soft. Two flies cautiously eye up the spent juice.
